Week 10: Manga & Japanese Comics Tradition

For this week's blog post, I read "Cinderella Boy." at first it was really hard to get into the groove with reading just because I've never read Manga before and the panels read backwards from what I'm used to reading which is completely normal for Manga. After I got past the way of reading I did find it fairly entertaining. It wasn't my favorite thing to read but it was terrible either. I kind of wish since the style is more simple that it would've been in color but that's just personal preference. I think the comic was slightly cliché and not super action packed so it made for a more laid back read. It didn't have me at the edge of my seat with anticipation so I found it slightly boring in a way.  I did like that the main character was female even though she was pretending to be a guy... in a boy band lol but of course she had to start falling in love with one of the other boy band members. Week 14: The Future of Comics

For this last week of comics with the topic being "The Future of Comics" I decided to read some of my personal favorites. So with the future of comics I think one of the major advances made was bringing comics to phones through apps. I've got an app called Webtoons and I'm addicted to two of the comics on there. The comics are seperated into chunks like episodes that you'd watch with a show on like Netflix or Hulu, etc. Depending on when you find a comic there could either be a ton of comic "episodes" to read or there could only be a handful. The frustrating but also super smart thing that Webtoons does is that new comics are released every week or you could pay to read the next 3 early. I never pay for them because #college #imbroke but it is SO hard to wait sometimes! The comics I read religiously are Assassin Roommate and Lore Olympus . Assessment

While I was reading  Batman the Killing Joke  my main reaction was a lot of empathy for the Joker to be honest. I never really got into superhero comics when I was younger and had only seen glimpses of movies my older brother would watch about them but I had never seen or heard of the backstory of the Joker or how his whole criminal career began with Batman. I ended up needing more time than everyone else to read because I was trying to soak in the images but also the words because they felt really important to the story and I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything I could use to make connections in different parts of the storyline. I really enjoyed the visuals and how the flashbacks were in black and white and how easily you could distinguish characters even with their younger selves. I think Joker's backstory is really sad and he was just trying to give his significant other and their child a fighting chance for a better life. A life he thought they deserved... Who does...
